TALKING POINTS
1) Dan Renaud, East Greenbush: From his Talking Point on Thursday, half of the Red Sox players that John Freeman accuses the team of "buying" to win the World Series were acquired via trade, not free agency. And consider this: Estimating that 95 wins will win the American League East in 2009, based on the teams' salary projections, the Yankees will spend about $1 million more per win than the Red Sox. So who's trying to buy a championship? Send your 50-word talking points to bcallen@timesunion.com

2) Phil Neuffer, Albany: This is in reply to John Freeman of Albany: Four of the players you mention the Sox buying were acquired in trades or from the farm system. You forget that the Yankees also bought players in that time span (A-Rod, Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi, Carl Pavano), they just didn't work out. You also forget that A.J. Burnett is a severe injury risk who only shows up in contract years and that CC Sabathia disappears in the playoffs. Speaking of forgetting, Boston had that drought, but don't the Yankees have the biggest choke in sports history?

3) Gene VanAmburgh, Menands: I'm in total agreement with Mark Mindel about Brett Favre -- he needs to go, now that we learn about his behavior in the Jets' locker room. He doesn't mix with his teammates; he must feel he's above them. You can't win with that attitude. Then to act the way he did when Miami beat them, by not going over to Chad Pennington to congratulate him after the game was showing disrespect and told us all he has no class. The Jets won't be able to sign a new coach until Brett says so long. No more press conferences, no more tears, just go.
