
BOSTON (AP) - Longtime Boston Red Sox scout Matt Sczesny, credited with signing players such as Mo Vaughn, John Valentin and Bob Stanley, has died.
The team announced Monday night that the 76-year-old Sczesny died Sunday in Long Island, N.Y., after battling cancer. He scouted for the Red Sox from 1971 through the 2008 season.Sczesny played at St. John's University. He was a minor league infielder for the Red Sox from 1954-1959, missing the 1957 season for military service, and managed in Boston's farm system for 11 years before becoming a scout.
Sczesny is survived by his wife Joan, son Matthew Sczesny Jr., a daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
Funeral services are planned for Thursday in Deer Park, N.Y.
