BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox held a moment of silence for Dom DiMaggio before their game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.
The former Red Sox center fielder died early Friday morning at the age of 92 at his home in Marion, Mass. The No. 7 with a large circle around it was cut into the center-field grass from just behind the infield dirt to about 50 feet in front of the warning track. DiMaggio wore the jersey number during 10 full seasons plus three games in 1953, all with the Red Sox.
He was teammates with Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, now a Red Sox instructor.
"I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times," Boston manager Terry Francona said before Friday's game. "He'd come through town pretty infrequently. But you'd see him with Johnny. He'd sit in the dugout before a game."
After the top of the first inning, the center-field scoreboard showed a photo of DiMaggio with the message: "We remember Dom DiMaggio 1917-2009."
It also showed black-and-white photos and video of DiMaggio and a color photo of him throwing a ceremonial first pitch before a game at Fenway Park.
