Minor league report: Solid pitching prospects

Minor league report: Solid pitching prospects
A lot of pitchers changing roles, a lot of hitters shifting gears and some hidden gems down at the lower levels to tuck away for legacy drafting you probably won't hear much more about until you see them pop up on prospect lists next spring.

HOT

Marco Carrillo, P, Cubs - Carrillo gave up one hit over eight scoreless innings on Friday for High-A Daytona, striking out three and walking three. In five July starts, his BAA is .136. On the year, he has a BAA of .199 and a WHIP of 0.98, with a 66:31 K:BB over 110 2/3 innings, with nine home runs and a GO:AO of 0.85. It would be nice to see more strikeouts and more groundballs, but that could follow. His July GO:AO is 1.18, and he got 15 groundball outs on Friday, so it could be in the process of rising already. He's one to watch.

Colton Willems, P, Nationals - Willems struck out five and walked one over five innings on Tuesday for Low-A Hagerstown, while giving up two earned runs on seven hits. He had turned it around in June and July until an ugly outing on Saturday, though he had not been striking a lot of people out until recently. In July, he has posted his best strikeout rate at 16 over 25 innings. On the year, he has a 58:30 K:BB over 104 1/3 innings, but with seven home runs, a 1.55 GO:AO, a .254 BAA, that's not a bad overall set of numbers.

Oswaldo Sosa, P, Twins – Sosa, demoted from Double-A and sent to the bullpen, where his year-long control problems continued, is back to starting. He may be worth sticking with, if you own him, as some of his key internal numbers are very good. For example, he has a 2.25 GO:AO at High-A (1.62 at Double-A), and he has not given up a home run over 26 2/3 High-A innings. He may have found the answer.

Brandon Snyder, 1B, Orioles - Snyder is hitting .337/.368/.606 in July for High-A Frederick. He has improved every month this season and is at .294/.333/.475 for the year with 10 home runs and an off-kilter 60:19 K:BB over 308 at-bats. The power has picked up in July: 10 doubles and six home runs, though Snyder needs to sustain this to move up, given that he is a corner infielder.

Josh Ellis, P, Diamondbacks - Ellis has a 19:5 K:BB over his last 21 2/3 innings of relief for High-A Visalia through Monday. On the year, including two brief appearances at Triple-A, he has gone 50 1/3 innings and has a 50:13 K:BB with one home run and a .190 BAA. The 11th-round 2007 pick should be moving up soon.

Jesse English, P, Giants - San Jose's English is leading the High-A California League in strikeouts with 107 through Monday. He is 10-4 with a 3.17 ERA in a hitter's league. He has a .233 BAA and has given up 37 walks and nine home runs over 105 innings. He will be 24 in September, so it would not be surprising if the Giants move him up quickly.

Blake Maxwell, P, Red Sox - Maxwell, at High-A Lancaster, has been moved to starter by the Red Sox. He could be a sleeper. He has a 1.83 GO:AO and has walked only 14 over 89 2/3 innings. Both traits are not new, and they are the most difficult ones to teach. Not surprisingly, he has given up just four home runs over 89 2/3 innings in a tough league for pitchers. The 40th-round 2005 pick could be a nice surprise.

Ryne Reynoso, P, Braves - Reynoso has been hot in his five July starts at High-A Myrtle Beach. He is 4-0 this month with a 2.39 ERA, a .226 BAA and, oddly, five home runs. He is third in the Carolina League in WHIP at 1.19 with a 1-6 record, a 3.24 ERA and a .244 BAA. He should be moving up soon.

NOT

Chris Tillman, P, Orioles - Tillman walked four and gave up four hits over four innings on Friday for Double-A Bowie. He struck out five and gave up five earned runs. He has an off-the-charts 18:14 K:BB over 17 2 /3innings covering five starts in July, with a 0.52 GO:AO and a .306 BAA.

Oscar Tejeda, SS, Red Sox - Tejeda went 0-for-3 on Saturday for Low-A Greenville, continuing his disappointing year at the plate. He's at .246/.288/.313 for the year, after starting the year by hitting .241 in April, so while he has been consistent, that ain't saying much. He has one home run, five steals and a 47:13 K:BB over 240 at-bats. He will have to kick it up a notch or two to be considered a serious offensive option for fantasy leagues.

Chris Lubanski, OF, Royals – While Lubanski is hitting .324 over his last 10 games at Triple-A Omaha and may be turning it around, it seems unlikely, given his year thus far: .242/.310/.451 with 12 home runs and a 97:29 K:BB over 293 at-bats – somewhat disappointing for Lubanski and any owners who had him on a fast track. All of these numbers are significant drop-offs from last year's composite numbers. He is only 23 and may be playing at a level above his current abilities.

John Tolisano, 2B, Blue Jays - Tolisano is hitting .183/.275/.352 in July through Friday for Low-A Lansing. His line of .253/.335/.393 for the year, with five home runs and five steals, is not liable to put him on any Top 100 lists to crack any fantasy lineups in the near future.
