--2B Dustin Pedroia missed his second consecutive game with a strained groin muscle that he suffered while swinging at a pitch Sunday night. Manager Terry Francona had originally expected Pedroia to return Wednesday. "There are a lot of lineup things to consider," Pedroia said. "I don't want to do anything stupid where I'm out for a long time."
--RHP John Smoltz threw a side session at extended spring training in Florida on Wednesday afternoon, and he came through it "feeling great" according to manager Terry Francona. The 42-year-old is on tap to throw a few innings at extended spring training on Friday afternoon, and he is still shooting for a return to the big leagues at some point in June. Smoltz has been on the disabled list all season after undergoing shoulder surgery last season, and he suffered a setback in his throwing program two weeks ago. --RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to throw roughly 80 pitches on Friday afternoon for Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) in his third and final minor league rehab start, and the 28-year-old could be ready to rejoin the big-league club next week. Matsuzaka has been on the 15-day disabled list with a slightly strained right shoulder and has made two previous starts for Pawtucket. Matsuzaka was 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA in two starts for the Red Sox this season before landing on the 15-day DL to strengthen up his right shoulder.
