Boston Red Sox Roster Report 2009-05-13

Boston Red Sox Roster Report 2009-05-13
--1B Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day disabled list with bruising and tightness around his left oblique after missing the last seven games with an injury that first cropped up May 4. Youkilis attempted to take batting practice before Tuesday's game against the Angels but had to cut short the hitting session. A short time later, Youkilis was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5.

--SS Gil Velazquez was called up to take the spot of Kevin Youkilis on Boston's 25-man roster once the first baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Velazquez was 0-for-2 in five games with the Red Sox during his first stint with the big-league club, and he was hitting .206 in 16 games with Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) this season. Velazquez gives the Sox additional depth with injuries nagging a handful of Sox infielders.

--2B Dustin Pedroia strained his right groin muscle during an at-bat Sunday against the Rays and missed Tuesday's opener against the Angels. 2B Nick Green got the start for the Red Sox in Pedroia's place. "Everything really is good," manager Terry Francona said of Pedroia. "He actually reported in way better than what we probably expected. He wanted to play (Tuesday). That, to me, is the best sign of all."

MEDICAL WATCH:

2B Dustin Pedroia (strained groin) left the May 10 game. He did not play May 12, and he is day-to-day.

1B Kevin Youkilis (strained left oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5.

OF Mark Kotsay (back surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 2, but he left the May 3 game with a strained right calf. A week later, he still hadn't returned to action.

RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (mild right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw on flat ground April 21 and threw long toss April 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 5.

SS Jed Lowrie (sprained left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 12. He had surgery April 21, and he is expected to be out until the All-Star break.

RHP John Smoltz (right shoulder surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is hoping to pitch for the Red Sox in June despite a setback in late April.

RHP Miguel Gonzalez (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 14.
