--RHP Clay Buchholz was bypassed when the team announced that young RHP Daniel Bard was called up to the big club on Sunday afternoon. Manager Terry Francona said the Sox preferred to have Buchholz keep building up his confidence at Class AAA rather than move up Buchholz and push RHP Justin Masterson back into the bullpen.
--DH David Ortiz still hasn't hit a home run, but nobody can accuse him of being impatient at the plate. Ortiz has drawn a walk in 10 straight games, the longest such stretch for a Sox hitter since Ortiz walked in 11 consecutive games from Sept. 2-13, 2005. Ortiz is second on the Sox with 20 bases on balls this season, behind OF Jason Bay's 28 walks. --OF J.D. Drew continues to play through a tight left quad that has caused him to miss playing time over the last three weeks. Drew didn't play against the Rays on Saturday at Fenway Park and was hoping to use Monday's off day to help heal the area enough to keep playing on the West Coast this week without interruption. "Just told them my one concern was trying to extend it first to third," Drew told the Boston Globe. "I was going to kind of play it on how I felt. If I felt it start to tighten up, I was going to have to back off, not run as hard. I'm not going to play the game if I don't feel like I can, as far as jeopardizing an injury."
MEDICAL WATCH:
2B Dustin Pedroia (strained groin) left the May 10 game. He is day-to-day.
1B Kevin Youkilis (back) came out of the game May 4 and didn't play May 5-10. He hopes to return May 12.
OF J.D. Drew (quadriceps tightness) did not play May 9 but started on May 10.
OF Mark Kotsay (back surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 2, but he left the May 3 game with a strained right calf.
RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (mild right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw on flat ground April 21 and threw long toss April 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 5.
