Boston Red Sox Roster Report 2009-05-11

Boston Red Sox Roster Report 2009-05-11
--RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka took the mound for his second of three minor-league rehab starts with the Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) Red Sox on Sunday afternoon. Matsuzaka threw 58 pitches for the PawSox, and allowed four hits and a walk without an earned run in four innings of work. The Japanese hurler didn't record a strikeout during the rehab start, and has one more minor-league outing scheduled for Friday night. Matsuzaka is scheduled to throw 75-80 pitches in the third outing, and should be back with the Sox in less than two weeks provided he doesn't have any setbacks.

--2B Dustin Pedroia left Sunday night's win over the Rays after he strained his groin during a third inning at-bat against RHP Matt Garza. Pedroia grounded to short and came up lame while running down the first-base line, and SS Julio Lugo replaced him in the lineup after SS Nick Green shifted over to second base. Sox manager Terry Francona estimated that the reigning AL MVP might miss one game because of the injury, but should be ready to go on Wednesday. "You know if he comes out, he's hurt because he's a tough kid," said Francona. "He also thinks that he can play Tuesday. I don't think that I would do that because we're going to travel out there. But I bet he'll be in there Wednesday."

MEDICAL WATCH:

2B Dustin Pedroia (strained groin) left the May 10 game but could return on May 12.

1B Kevin Youkilis (back) came out of the game May 4 and didn't play May 5-10.

OF J.D. Drew (quadriceps tightness) did not play May 9 but started on May 10.

OF Mark Kotsay (back surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 2, but he left the May 3 game with a strained right calf.

RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (mild right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw on flat ground April 21 and threw long toss April 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on May 5.

SS Jed Lowrie (sprained left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 12. He had surgery April 21, and he is expected to be out until the All-Star break.

RHP John Smoltz (right shoulder surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is hoping to pitch for the Red Sox in June despite a setback in late April.

RHP Miguel Gonzalez (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 14.
