Normally the Sox might be in dire straits when SS Jed Lowrie landed on the 15-day disabled with a left wrist problem after SS Julio Lugo was already out with right knee surgery, but SS Nick Green has been a pleasant surprise since the first of spring training. Green opened eyes with his offensive performance during the Grapefruit League season, and was hitting .286 with some respectable pop through the team's first 12 games. It wouldn't be shocking if Green's offense leveled off a bit with increased playing time, but his emergence means that the Sox don't have to scramble for a stopgap solution in the infield.
PLAYER NEWS: --SS Jed Lowrie is now likely to have surgery on his ailing left wrist in the next few days, according to manager Terry Francona. The young shortstop will undergo a procedure that's expected to sideline him until the All-Star break in July, but it's better than season-ending surgery that was also potentially on the table. "We're still having some internal discussions," Francona said of Lowrie's ultimate medical solution. "In saying that, I think it's generally pretty good news. I think the medical people even think with the surgery that he would be having he could be playing by the All-Star break. That's where we're at today."
--SS Julio Lugo has returned to Boston to be with the Sox, and -- after passing tests set by the Sox medical staff on his surgically repaired right knee -- will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Pawtucket on Tuesday. With SS Jed Lowrie likely headed for wrist surgery, it could be a relatively short time before Lugo is ready to return to the Sox lineup. Lugo had the surgery in the middle of the spring training, and spent the last week in extended spring training getting ready to play. "I feel much better," said Lugo, who told the Boston Globe he feels that he's "80 percent. I've got mobility now. I don't have that much pain now. I had my meniscus done. I feel good. My little spots, when I do some stuff, it bothers me a little. That's going to be there, but I can tolerate that."
--OF Rocco Baldelli left Monday's game in the fourth inning with tightness in his left hamstring. Baldelli has been battling soreness in his hamstrings over the last few days and aggravated the muscle while running around the basepaths during the Sox's win. If Baldelli needs to be placed on the 15-day disabled list, OF Jeff Bailey is the likely replacement from the Class AAA Pawtucket roster. "He's sore," manager Terry Francona said of Baldelli. "We'll know more (Tuesday). It had been bothering him this week and he got to the point where he really felt pretty good. Then he was going around second and it grabbed at him a little bit. We're going to need to re-evaluate him and see how it goes."
--LHP Hunter Jones made his big-league debut in Monday's blowout win over the Orioles. The 25-year-old threw a scoreless, hitless ninth inning of relief and was given lineup cards and several game baseballs to commemorate the event. Following the game, Jones was exchanging text messages with family and friends celebrating a pivotal achievement in any player's pro baseball career. Jones had already warmed up several times through the weekend with the thought that he was about to enter a game, but Marathon Monday proved to be Jones' day.
