--SS Julio Lugo is leaving for Florida on Thursday to start working out at the Red Sox's minor league complex in Fort Myers. The infielder is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will work out in Florida for approximately a week before rejoining the team on the West Coast. "We'll kind of see how he's doing," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "The one thing we really want him to do is to be able to play (shortstop) before he starts playing in games, and not just DH."

--3B Mike Lowell smacked a double in the third inning, which gives him at least one hit in each of his 10 opening-day starts in the big leagues. Lowell has hit .308 (12-for-39) in opening-day games with a home run, six doubles, eight RBIs, four runs and three walks. Lowell's 10-game opening-day hitting streak is tied for second among active big-leaguers.

--OF Rocco Baldelli is expected to make his first appearance with the Red Sox when Rays LHP Scott Kazmir takes the mound on Wednesday. Baldelli gives manager Terry Francona a strong right-handed option for the starting lineup with OFs Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew both left-handed hitters. That could give Baldelli a chance to face his former Rays teammates. "I'd like to (play Baldelli)," Francona said. "Kazmir has been real tough on us, and some of our lefties to boot. It seems like, especially with a couple days off and not playing, it would be a good idea to try to get him in there. (I've) got to figure out where."

--C Jason Varitek hit a solo home run, his second career opening-day home run in his 10th career opening-day start for the Red Sox. Varitek trails only Carl Yastrzemski (six), Dwight Evans (five), Jim Rice (three) and Ted Williams (three) on the Sox franchise leader board for home runs smacked on opening day. The switch-hitting Varitek hit only .201 with eight home runs in 328 at bats as a left-handed hitter last season but made solid contact all game long from the left side of the plate.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Julio Lugo (arthroscopic right knee surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is expected to miss the first two weeks of the regular season.

OF Mark Kotsay (back surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He hopes to return in May.

RHP John Smoltz (right shoulder surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He threw 40 fastballs during his first bullpen session in late March and is expected to pitch for the Red Sox in June barring any setbacks.

OF Jonathan Van Every (sprained right ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27.

RHP Miguel Gonzalez (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27.
