Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-07-12
--RHP Clay Buchholz was called up from Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) to make the start against Baltimore and again flashed glimpses of his vast potential during five innings of work. The 23-year-old hurler is expected to fill a spot in the Sox rotation for the foreseeable future, and has pitched only 86 innings between the Sox and the minor leagues this season. Buchholz had trouble commanding his fastball and cranking up the velocity, but didn't have a problem in either department after working on both areas in the minors. Buchholz regularly hit 95 and 96 mph on the radar and was getting swings and misses with his fast-moving heater.

--OF J.D. Drew was out for the second straight game with a strained back, but Sox manager Terry Francona expected his right fielder to play the rest of the weekend series. This is the second time this season that Drew missed games with a back issue, but the outfielder said this back ailment wasn't as bad as the previous flare-up -- an injury that caused Drew to miss the first three games of the season.

--OF Coco Crisp was out of the lineup with a sore left forearm, but the injury isn't expected to be anything lingering or serious. The speedy center fielder is also saddled in an 0-for-14 drought at the plate, and is caught up in a bit of a numbers game depth-wise in the outfield. "He is a little beat up," said Sox manager Terry Francona. Crisp appeared as a defensive replacement in Tuesday's win over the Twins, but hasn't registered an at-bat in Boston's last three games.

--SS Julio Lugo, who pulled his left quad in the ninth inning of the 7-3 loss to Baltimore, is batting a miserable .139 with runners in scoring position this season, but had a season-high two RBIs against the Orioles. The error-prone shortstop has seen both his power and run production statistics go south in his second season with the Red Sox. Last season, Lugo had an extra-base hit every 13.7 at-bats, but the extra-base struggles have resulted in an extra-base hit every 21.6 plate appearances this season. The lean middle infielder also had five home runs and 40 RBIs at last season's All-Star break, and is headed into this season's break with a homer and 22 RBIs.

--2B Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and saw his career-high hitting streak end at 17 games. Pedroia was 36-for-76 (.474) during the hitting streak, which ranked as the longest hitting streak for a Red Sox since 1B Kevin Youkilis hit safely in 23 consecutive games from May 5?June 1, 2007. The streak was also the longest for a Sox second baseman since former 2B Todd Walker hit in 19 games in a row from May 10-June 5, 2003.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2-14 -- Boston's record in one-run games on the road, through July 6.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "They love me everywhere. What can I say? I guess I'm not stealing money." -- Sox OF Manny Ramirez, talking about being voted to his 12th American League All-Star team.
