Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-06-13
--1B Kevin Youkilis smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning that ended a 20-game homerless drought for the Gold Glover. Youkilis had a power surge during May when he hit seven home runs and knocked in 20 runs, but June has been much more bust than boom. Youkilis went into a bit of a temporary tailspin and hit .167 after his dugout skirmish with OF Manny Ramirez, but the first baseman's offense looked back on track Thursday night.

--RHP Manny Delcarmen's fastball has hit 97 mph several times, and he has been lights out as the Sox setup man over the last month. Delcarmen has a 1.17 ERA in his last 13 appearances, and he is currently enjoying an 8 1/3 scoreless inning streak. The hard-throwing righty has also retired eight of the last nine first batters that he's faced, a good sign for a reliever who often enters the game in times of trouble.

--OF Manny Ramirez is still battling soreness in his right hamstring, and he could miss some time during the six interleague road games ahead on the schedule. Manager Terry Francona indicated that Ramirez is doing everything he can to get ready for a return to left field, but the injury is still "grabbing at him."

"He understands that come Friday, if he doesn't play left field, we lose his bat, so we'll just do the best we can," Francona said.

--C Jason Varitek has been diagnosed with strep throat. He missed Thursday night's game with the illness after leaving Wednesday night's game early. Manager Terry Francona said that his catcher didn't look or sound all that good, but he fully expected that his captain would be back behind the plate when the Sox resume interleague play in Cincinnati on Friday night.

--RHP Jonathan Papelbon made some statements Wednesday night that indicate the Red Sox don't believe their differences with the Tampa Bay Rays are a thing of the past. The closer, speaking during his weekly segment on Comcast SportsNet, seemed to indicate that there may be a score to settle when the Red Sox visit Tropicana Field at the end of the month.

"In my opinion it is a bunch of bull what they did. All I got to say is what comes around goes around. Payback is a (son of a gun). In my opinion, and the way I feel right now, this thing isn't all settled and done. We still got to play them a few more times, and I know when we go into Tropicana, things will be a little different than when went in there last time."

BY THE NUMBERS: 238 -- Major league-record number of consecutive errorless games that Gold Glove Award-winning 1B Kevin Youkilis had played in prior to making an error last weekend.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "People were trying to pull my hair like little girls. I'm down on the ground, I mean the fight's pretty much over baseball-term wise. You want to come in late, and throw some extra blows and get your little blows in, that's cool. I'll cover up. It's all good, trying to pull some hair. It's all right." -- OF Coco Crisp, talking about the activity at the bottom of the pile during Thursday night's brawl with the Rays.
