Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2009-05-18
--SS Julio Lugo suffered a hip flexor injury/groin injury in the seventh inning of Saturday night's game against the Seattle Mariners and missed Sunday afternoon's road trip finale with the injury. With the off-day on Monday, the Sox hope that two days off in a row will be enough to allow the shortstop to return to the lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays in Boston. SS Gil Velazquez replaced Lugo on Saturday night, and SS Nick Green was in the starting lineup for Sunday afternoon's West Coast finale in Seattle. The injury to Lugo isn't expected to keep the infielder out of commission for an extended period.

--1B Kevin Youkilis is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday and is expected to play a pair of minor league rehab starts starting Monday at Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.). Youkilis has been on the DL with a sore left oblique and is planning on getting loose with some minor league AB's prior to rejoining the big club against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Youkilis hopes to mix in some innings playing defense at first base along with at bats at designated hitter during the two-game stint.

"I'm improving," said Youkilis to the Boston Globe. "If everything goes well, I'll be ready to play on Wednesday. Ready to rock."

--OF Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games, which is the longest active hitting tear in the big leagues. The speedy centerfielder is hitting at a .344 (21-for-61) clip with six stolen bases and eight runs scored during a stretch that dates back to May 2. It's also the longest hitting streak for a Sox centerfielder since former OF Johnny Damon collected a hit in 15 straight games from July 25-Aug. 12 2005. "He can score a lot of runs," said Sox manager Terry Francona. "When he's on, it can change the game."

BY THE NUMBERS: No. 1 -- The spot occupied by John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino and the rest of the Sox ownership group among baseball ownership during a Sports Illustrated list of the five best and five worse owners in each of the four major professional sports.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You know what the radar gun is for? The fans. I personally don't even think we should have them in the ballpark because it's a tool that benefits only the hitter, not a pitcher at all." -- RHP Jonathan Papelbon when talking about radar guns and the 100-mph fastball of recently recalled prospect RHP Daniel Bard.
