Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2009-04-21
--OF Brad Wilkerson, 31, has opted to retire according to a report in the Providence Journal. Wilkerson was in the running for a reserve spot with the Sox in spring training but was told late in camp that he wouldn't be making the team. Wilkerson reported to Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) but reportedly walked into PawSox manager Ron Johnson's office after the second game of the season and said that his heart wasn't in the game anymore.

--RHP Josh Beckett ended his appeal and accepted a five-game suspension, reduced from six, from Major League Baseball for a pitch thrown over the head of Angels OF Bobby Abreu on April 12. Beckett said he disagreed with taking on any suspension because he felt ultimately that he would have been exonerated, but Red Sox management advised the starter to accept punishment now so it wouldn't adversely affect Boston's starting rotation. Beckett will make his next start Saturday against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, and essentially won't miss a turn in the rotation. "Everybody has to answer to somebody, and my boss told me this was the best thing for the ball club," said Beckett. "If it was up to me, obviously, we would have gone through with this whole thing, because I don't think I deserve even one game. When your boss tells you that something is best for the whole group, that's what we do."

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- the number of pickoffs that LHP Jon Lester has in his first three starts this season. The big lefty credits Sox bench coach Brad Mills with calling the successful pickoff plays from the bench.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everybody has to answer to somebody and my bosses told me this was the best thing for the ballclub. If it was up to me I would have seen let's go through with this whole thing because I don't think I deserve even one game. But when your boss tells you something is best for the whole group that's what we do." -- RHP Josh Beckett discussing the decision-making process in agreeing to drop his appeal when his suspension was dropped from six games to five.
