Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-04-16
--SS Alex Cora will end up on the 15-day disabled list -- according to Red Sox manager Terry Francona -- after tweaking his right elbow during pregame warm-ups last weekend. Both the utility infielder and Francona had previously professed that Cora was available without restrictions over the last several days, but the 32-year-old may need more time before his injured right wing will allow him to play. The move would be retroactive to April 10, and the infielder will undergo an MRI to determine the cause of his elbow injury.

--LHP Jon Lester didn't speak with the media Monday night after putting together another erratic performance, but he expressed frustration Tuesday afternoon concerning his problems consistently throwing strikes and working deep into games. C Jason Varitek and pitching coach John Farrell have continued to stress that Lester isn't far away from consistent effectiveness, but their optimism is hard to see through the 15 walks in 20 1/3 innings pitched and 5.31 ERA through four starts.

--OF Manny Ramirez has the unique distinction of being the only player in major league history with 800 career RBIs for two different franchises. Ramirez has 814 career RBIs in his eight-year career with the Red Sox and also amassed 804 RBIs during his seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians. Former 1B Jimmie Foxx and 1B Rafael Palmeiro are the only other two major league players who have totaled 700 RBIs with two different teams, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

--3B Jed Lowrie played in his first major league game Tuesday night and collected the first three RBIs of his career. The first RBI came on a rather unglamorous fielder's choice in the fifth inning, but the switch-hitting rookie knocked in two more with his first big-league hit in the seventh inning. The majority of Lowrie's minor league experience has been at both shortstop and second base, but the rookie expressed a growing confidence with his play at third base after spending time their this spring.

--RHP Mike Timlin leads all active pitchers with 1,014 major league appearances. At 42 years, 35 days old on Monday night, Timlin became the oldest Sox relief pitcher to notch a victory since Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley notched a 'W' on Sept. 17, 1998, at 43 years, 349 days old. Timlin struggled in his first two games back from the disabled list, but he pitched much more effectively in earning his first win of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 11-for-11 -- OF Jacoby Ellsbury has shown the he has speed to burn on the basepaths by staying perfect in stolen base attempts during his short big-league career, through April 13.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "David feels such a huge responsibility for what we're doing, things start snowballing, and then all of a sudden you get yourself into a rut. Sometimes I think even guys like David need to be reminded of how good they are." -- Manager Terry Francona on slumping DH David Ortiz.
