Boston Red Sox Notes, Quotes 2008-09-12
--RHP Paul Byrd was identified as the second pitcher paired with RHP Bartolo Colon to start Saturday's day-night doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. The Sox haven't specified which starter will pitch in which game, but, either way, Colon will be making his first start since June 16. The insertion of Colon into the rotation allows the Sox to give starters extra rest and potentially set up their rotation for a playoff run -- just as they were able to do in 2004 and 2007 en route to World Series titles. "I think we always feel whatever we do, we try to turn it to an advantage," manager Terry Francona said. "If we have time, we would try to make it to our advantage. If we don't have that, we'll try to make it to our advantage, too."

--RHP Josh Beckett made his second start since coming off the disabled list on Wednesday night and once again made it through the outing with good health and even better results. In 11 innings since coming off the DL, Beckett is 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA, and he featured a heavy diet of curveballs and cut fastballs in his most recent start against the Rays. "The good news is he feels real good and he's healthy," manager Terry Francona said. "He's built up (innings-wise), and another start or two and all of a sudden the shackles will be off and (his pitch count) will all be according to the game."

--2B Dustin Pedroia hit two doubles in Wednesday night's loss, increasing his season total to 47 and breaking the franchise record for doubles by a second baseman. Jody Reed had 45 doubles in 1990. Pedroia also recorded his 57th multi-hit game of the season, which leads the majors this season and is part of a growing American League MVP candidacy that gains steam by the day.

--RHP Junichi Tazawa, the phenom who was expected to be a first-round draft pick in the Japanese Professional League, has announced his intentions to sign with a major league team. The Red Sox are one of the teams prominently interested in the young Japanese pitcher, according to a report in the Japan Times. According to reports, Pacific Rim scout Jon Deeble has been in attendance during Tazawa's amateur games in Japan. If Tazawa goes through with his apparent plan, it would be the first time a prominent Japanese pre-draft amateur player has spurned the Japanese pro leagues to sign a deal with a big-league team.

--RHP Curt Schilling used a "Negotiating For Dummies" style book when he represented himself in negotiations with the Red Sox before joining the team in the fall of 2003, according to a Jed Hoyer interview posted on The little nugget from the Sox assistant general manager came when he was asked to reveal something that wasn't already known about the negotiations. All parties involved had a hearty laugh when Hoyer and GM Theo Epstein revealed their awareness of the book -- a point that came after Schilling agreed to the contract extension that brought him to Boston. "Whenever we would exchange offers, Curt would take (the offer) and then disappear to his office for an hour or so before responding. After we were done with the deal, I went into his office to find a quiet place to type up the final terms," said Hoyer. "On Curt's desk was 'Negotiating for Dummies' or 'My First Negotiation' or some such book. Theo and I just cracked up. Prior to leaving Curt's house for the press conference, Theo showed him what we had found. Curt thought it was pretty funny, though I think he was glad we found it after the fact."

BY THE NUMBERS: 455 -- Consecutive home sellouts for the Red Sox as of the Sept. 3 game at Fenway Park. The sellout streak tied the major league record set by the Indians from 1995-2001.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're in a good position. I feel like if I can just play good baseball these last few weeks, hopefully we're in the playoffs, we can get hot and see if we can do something special again." -- 3B Mike Lowell.
