Mike Lowell is the very definition of the term "professional hitter."

Never is that more evident than when the 35-year-old third baseman comes to the plate with runners in scoring position and it's up to Lowell to figure out a way to get those runners home.

It's something he's done well throughout his career. He has reached the magical 100-RBI plateau three times and has reached 90 RBI twice, in addition to his Gold Glove defense.

The RBI is actually the stat that Lowell takes the most pride in offensively when every little number is dissected at the end of the day, and he's going to have plenty of RBI opportunities this season with the masters of on-base percentage hitting in front of his No. 7 spot in the lineup.

"I take pride in (RBI) because I think that's what my responsibility is," said Lowell, who has missed only one Sox game this season after right hip surgery this winter. "A no-out RBI, one-out RBI or two-out RBI, I don't really care as long as I get them. I think I've been pretty lucky that I've had on-base percentage machines in front of me. Youk (Kevin Youkilis) is unreal. J.D. (Drew) and Jason Bay walk a lot, so I think that bodes well for me in the lineup that I'm in.

"I'm in situations with a lot of guys on base. I like that situation," added Lowell, who is riding a 13-game hitting streak. "I think that's kind of what I'm supposed to do on this team."

Lowell ranked second in the American League with 23 RBI this season, and he seems to be well on his way toward another crack at the RBI century mark this summer. For a guy who was a question mark entering the season, that's truly a worthy accomplishment.

RED SOX 6, INDIANS 5 (10 innings): OF Jonathan Van Every smashed his first big-league home run in the 10th inning to break a 5-5 tie and lead the Sox to a victory in Cleveland. LHP Jon Lester struggled in allowing seven runs and five hits in six innings, but the Boston bullpen threw four shutout innings to get the victory.
