Boston Red Sox Inside Pitch 2008-09-11
While it was a noteworthy moment for an old bullpen warhorse, Mike Timlin will remember his record-tying pitching experience for all of the wrong reasons.

The 42-year-old right-hander finally entered Wednesday night's epic game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the 14th inning, tying Kent Tekulve for the most relief appearances in major league history by a right-handed pitcher. Timlin has been called upon 1,050 times in his distinguished 17-year career, but on this night he was saddled with his fourth loss of the season.

Timlin came on with one out and nobody on in the 14th and got the second out before allowing two singles. But the big blow came when he attempted to work off the outside edge of the plate with a fastball and Tampa Bay first baseman Carlos Pena rocked a three-run shot into the Green Monster seats in left field.

The game was essentially over at that point, and Timlin was left to again pick up the pieces. His ERA spiked up to 6.02 as he continued his season-long run of inconsistency.

"He didn't miss with that pitch," manager Terry Francona said. "That was off the plate. I bet it was a couple of inches off with some movement. I don't think that was a bad pitch."

RAYS 4, RED SOX 2 (14 innings): RHP Mike Timlin surrendered a three-run homer to Carlos Pena in the top of the 14th inning to end an intense, playoff-style 1-1 deadlock over the previous 11 innings. RHP Josh Beckett allowed only a single run through six innings, and 2B Dustin Pedroia had two doubles and an RBI.
