Blue Jays could be crying in their near-beer tonight
With no beer and the feel-good vibe of opening day over, the Blue Jays expect a drop in attendance today when they play their second game of the season.

Ticket sales should come in at around 15,000 for tonight's game, less than a third of last night's 48,027 for the Jays' season opener against the Detroit Tigers at the Rogers Centre.

The club expects to report smaller crowds this season in part because they will be announcing paid attendance only, exclusive of tickets given away through promotions and discounts.

In previous seasons, attendance figures were based on turnstile counts, which included so-called "freebie" tickets.

The club has also adjusted its "sellout" figure to 49,292, down from 49,593.

The Jays are hoping for a good walk-up crowd tonight, but no beer will be available in the stands as a result of penalties handed down by the provincial government after licence violations last season at the Rogers Centre.

The penalties include dry nights for two Jays games and one Argonaut game.

A year ago, the Jays drew 50,171 for the club's home opener against the World Series defending-champion Boston Red Sox.

Crowds for the remainder of that Red Sox series were 35,238 for Game 2 and 31,000-plus for the finale.
